My daughter, in her infinite wisdom, put a metal travel mug in the microwave and it caught on fire. The entire cup was in flames within the microwave but the oven itself did not catch on fire. After cleaning out the microwave, the only apparent residual effect is coating on the top of the inside is seriously flaking. In other words, the outer layer of the paint/enamel is mostly gone and/or flaking off. Is it safe to use this microwave? Thanks.

I don’t microwave anything plastic like tupperware or plastic cups. My husband, however, uses the same plastic measuring cup to microwave something in almost every night. It’s starting to get a filmy, rough kind of white residue on the bottom that doesn’t scrape off.
Can I tell him I’m right, that he shouldn’t be putting that plastic in the microwave repeatedly?
